You never know how “important” TV is to you until the threat of it being taken away is before you. This about that statement, TV, important? The threat of it being taken away? For real? Will you listen to yourself! So growing up television was a staple in my house. We had TV in the living room, the kitchen and in two out of three bedrooms. Mine was the one without the TV, I had a stereo instead. But I can remember from an early age that when we had family dinners we watched shoes like Supermarket Sweep, Shop ‘til You Drop and Full House during the dinner hour. So it comes as no surprise to me that as an adult I enjoy sitting down and watching “my” shows like Grey’s Anatomy and This Is Us and like every show the Food Network has to offer, I love them all but hate the large Comcast bill.
Well with the New Year we are trying some newness in the Snyder house which included an alternative cable provider, one that was less expensive. We are trying to save for a family vacation so if we could cut our cable bill down then it would be a bit easier to save for our trip. So as we looked at available options we made the conclusion that Comcast needed to go, or atleast diminish it as much as possible. Several providers in our area didn’t have a reasonable internet package and we knew that internet was more important than the actual cable.
We already owned a PlayStation that sat collecting dust with the exception of the occasional DVD we’d watch so what better way to use that expensive “paper weight” than utilizing it to stream our cable. We also got this thing from Walmart called a ROKU which is also available on Amazon. Essentially, if I understand its purpose correctly, it also streams cable as well. We selected a plan through PlayStation VUE, which would cost us about $55.00 a month, paid a one-time fee of $30 for the ROKU box, it’s literally the size of a roll of quarters, downgraded with Comcast to just an internet plan for $85.00 a month.
So let me break this down, our regular Comcast bill was between $275 & $300 monthly (that was with a package including movie channels as well as an HD box, a regular box, a mini box for the kids, phone which was never used we don’t even know what the phone number was and internet), with the PlayStation VUE and the Comcast internet our monthly bill is roughly $140. We are saving nearly $135 a month!
Since switching to the ROKU and the PlayStation VUE, it’s been about two weeks, I have actually found myself watching less TV, imagine that. I don’t feel the need to scroll through all 900+ channels just to find something mindless to watch. I turn on my show, watch it, and walk away. It’s amazing what not having all of those channels to scroll through would do. Now I’m not saying that we don’t have 900+ channels, we have actually I think 75 in the PlayStation plan we choose along with Netflix and YouTube but I don’t feel the need to sit and watch all of that.
We also have less commercials which really cut down on the little voices shouting “I want that!” with every toy commercial. With how many channels we had with Comcast and the amount of money we were paying, it made us feel like we needed to make sure we were watching as many channels as possible to make sure we were getting our money’s worth. We are now enjoying watching more family movies and more family time and less mindless tv watching.
